Today is Ash Wednesday; not a date most Protestants celebrate much. But I feel more of a leaning towards taking the time of preparation for Easter that Lent is more seriously. I need to prepare.
I came across a meditation at Northumbria that spoke to me. This is prehaps the fast we should all be called to observe – not some small token of repentance like giving up Big Macs for 40 days.
THE FAST
Is this not the fast that I have chosen:
to loose the bonds of wickedness?
to undo the heavy burden?
and to let the oppressed go free?
that you break every yoke?
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry?
that you bring to your house those who are cast down?
when you see the naked person that you cover them?
and not hide yourself from your own flesh and blood?

Randall was a little shocked that I didn’t know anything about Lent. I was never taught anything about Lent. It’s a relatively new concept to me.
My wife suggested I give up blogging for 40 days. I’m not sure I could do that. But that’s probably precisely why I should!
Marc – our denomination has a history of a bit of liturgy. We’ve kept some of the good parts but are not completely hung up on them.
I grew up in an evangelical denomination that didn’t talk about Lent, but I have come to really appreciate it as a wonderful preparation for Easter. A couple of years ago our family, including the kids, gave up caffeine for Lent. One day I forgot and bought a Coke to share with one of the girls, and she had to gently remind me about discipline.
