Switching

Well, as you can see, I have changed some things around here.  I’ve switched over to WordPress as my blog hoster and somehow, in doing that, I have lost all my comments.

Not quite sure what I did there.  So anyone know if there is a way to fix that?  Or does life just go on with new comments from here?

Affinities

It seems that I have made the front page of the paper.  That’s right.  Me and not my usually newsworthy husband.

Prince Albert Daily Herald – front page – Top Story

Not like I am bragging or anything.  This is more likely to get me in trouble with the people at my college who might see it as a form of advertising than to cause a rise to fame.

Its a good story about a work that I have been involved with from its start-up here in PA and it tells the story of what we do pretty well.  It is a work I love to do.

But when I told the reporter that I do this work because I like children and that I do this because it fits with how I practice and who I am, how on earth did this get translated into a  phrase like “affinity” for children?  Maybe it is just too big a word for me.

For Randall

and anyone else who wants to see what Prince Albert looks like in the dark of winter when we have had a bit of snow.

winter 2008 003

I did stop to take pictures as I walked last night but my camera has its limitations.  By 8pm it is very dark here now.  It is still very dark at 7:30 am when I go to work.  So welcome to the dark long nights of winter in Prince Albert.

There is a set on Flikr that you can check every now and then.  I will add to it as the winter progresses.  Even some daylight pictures.

Winter is here it seems

I  went for a walk again tonight.  The snow has stopped falling leaving a couple of inches of pure white magic on everything.  Including the streets.  Of course it is more slippery and dangerous on the street than on the path.  And I was walking with my trusty winter grips on my shoes.

It was so quiet.  Really not cold – hardly at all.

It seems as if winter is likely here to stay and it is time for snow to cover up the rather dowdy looking stripped bare trees.

The snow tonight was beautiful and the temperature as well.  Perfect for walking.

I do not look forward to the bitter cold days.  I know they will come.  But so will Spring in – only 6 months.  6 months – half the year.  Might as well make the best of winter.

Little things

It is some of the little things in life that make me feel good.

I managed to meet my target of having the next two Greek quizzes done by today.  I’ll fax them away tomorrow.  Whoopee!  Feels good to be on target.

My sermon has come together pretty well.  My thoughts are down on paper.  And saved this time on the computer.  No major fiascos today.

And I managed to go for a good walk today as well as yesterday.  I needed both the exercise and I needed to get outside.  We had our first real snow today although it was not very much.

And I practiced my music on the bass.  I should get my very own bass this week.

It just feels as if this has been a good day.

Sometimes there is nothing but frustration with a computer.

Last night it ate my sermon!

Maybe I was just too tired but I accidentally hit the don’t save changes button when it asked.

I guess it is not really the fault of the computer – operator error.  In other words, "How could I have been so dumb?"

So finally, I went to bed very late with the realization that I was not going to remember how to say the  things I had seemed to put down on "paper" so clearly and actually slept.  Till 4 am.

Now it is 6 and I have rewritten it and saved it.  Now comes going over it.  Revising.  But at least I have the essence of what I need to say saved!

And I am going back to bed to sleep.

Crisp but clear

It was a beautiful day for a walk on the river path.  It was sunny and relatively warm, although I did wear my winter coat and gloves.

As I walked I could hear the newly forming sheets of ice crashing into each other as the current carried them down stream.

There was not a single mosquito.

Thirty Two

Just got of the phone from wishing my second son, David, a Happy Birthday.

I still remember the night.  I’d ben in labour most of that Sunday and finally, in the dark of the night, everyone medical at Karawa gathered in the private maternity suite. Kerosene lamps were lit, Leo and the others began playing cards, (Rook of course, it being a mission station) and I lay there wondering how long the ordeal was going to take.  No fetal monitors, no monitors of any kind that I can remember. Sheesh – no lights or power even till the last the stage . The power plant was started up at the bitter end so the delivery was not done in the dark. Al the mission station knew I was having my baby since the power plant went on!

And then David arrived. Leo had the audacity to take some photos. I had the wisdom to destroy them.

Happy Birthday, dear boy of mine.

Short term memory

Someone said that for those of us who don’t have such god short term memory anymore, we need to repeat what we are trying to memorize over and over and do it in writing, looking and verbalizing.

That sounds like learning Greek.

That is what I have ben doing since returning from orchestra practice.

I have to do it for learning the music too.

Life seems one big repetition some days.

Fun. This is fun. Repeat, "This is fun"  So it goes.

We are old

A few mid-night thoughts.

I wish I knew why it is so hard to go back to a state of peaceful sleep when I wake in the middle of the night.  Wish the mind would return to sleep mode at the flick of a button.  Alas…

And since I didn’t stay up till the results of the election were irrevocably clear, my question to Leo when we both woke at the same time was what the results were.  Obama is it then.  Good.

We are old –  when we ask about election results and no other more interesting thoughts arouse us in the middle of the night!
