Birthdays

Today was family day at my office it seemed.  My sister and her kids were here and today was the day Kristie got her braces off – Yeah!!!  And everyone else got cleaned up.

And because a lot of my family were in town and there were some important birthdays going on, we all got together tonight for cake and ice cream.  Dad is 86 tomorrow.  My daughter-in-law, Michelle, is a mere 29 today.  Both good reason to eat cake and ice cream – as if we really needed an excuse.

And Leo got back today from a weekend of meetings and visiting his brother.  That is always good – well most of the time – to get him back -:)

Dinner and a Movie

This afternoon my son called and invited himself, wife and son over for supper.  He brought the steaks so I got off easy.  Haven’t seen them (well not all three at once) for over a week.  And they are always welcome – I think they know that.

They brought a movie over – Veronica Guerin.  Wow!  Gave everything for what she knew was right and didn’t back down in the face of threats – and then the threats were carried out.  Made me think – that is what we are supposed to be like as followers of Christ – not backing down in the face of evil.  Doing what is the right thing to do not what is safe.

It was a good movie to watch together.  As I was sitting there all comfy on my couch enjoying their company, I realized just how much fun it is to have my kids around.  Fun watching a grandson grow.  Fun watching my son be a dad – changing diapers and all.

What do you say?

What do you say to a fiteen going on sixteen year old who is dieing to get a belly button ring?

Her sister just got a little nose ring and is having fun right now with a cold.

A least she is not likely to get a runny belly button!   Still I think I will try to hold out for as long as I can – not exactly sure why.  Maybe it is just hard to see my baby want to grow up and do what she wants to do.

Blogfest

Well, that was fun.  It’s good to have real faces and people to match up with those blogs.

Maybe next time we will have it in PA.  Who knows?

Thanks Becky for pulling it all together.

I'm Coming Too

So I mentioned to the old guy that I would sure like to go to Saskatoon tonight and see some of my fellow bloggers.  He was fine with that so I asked him to come along and meet some of you guys too.  He’s already going to be half way there – at Rosthern – engaged in his favorite activity (that is golf !) in the afternoon.  So we’ll see all of you at this event if you can make it.

Saskatoon Blogfest 2K4

O’Sheas Irish Pub at – well we’ll make it by about 7:30 I think.

How do you computer geeks get the picture to copy?

A busy Friday off

Today was my bi-weekly Friday off – from the office.  It was a busier, harder day than I usually put in, or maybe the work was just different and I am not used to it.  Grace and I went to my aunt’s appartment and cleaned the kitchen.  I think we got things pretty ship shape.  She is a collector – of everything!  I hope she doesn’t mind that I threw out stacks of margarine containers and rolls of used and reused plastic bags.  She just won’t need them up at Abbeyfield house.

Tonight I am tired and a bit stiff and sore.  I guess that might be from the weeding of the garden I did early this morning before beginning the cleaning.  The garden is sorely in need of a gardener’s hand.  The weeds have taken over some things.  I just have not had time to do much in it this year.  I am glad I have lots of perennials otherwise it would really be in bad shape.  With all the rain and now with the bit of sun we are having, the lupins are in full bloom as are the lillies.

Licenced to go.

She did it!  All the time spent driving with her, all my “meanness” giving her advice.  Yesterday she got her licence.  She is one happy girl.

Now she can borrow the car.

Yesterday, I had to call her to get a ride home from work.  And wait.

Was I saying this was a good thing????

Only in Saskatchewan

One of my assistants has children in swimming lessons.  She called to see if they had gone to their lessons.  It is sunny today but cool.  Her husband has the kids in the bathtub – warming up.  Only in Saskatchewan do you send your kids to swimming lessons and then have to treat them for hypothermia!

Driving lesson?

My evening last night involved another driving lesson.  Test is coming up on Tuesday.

It appears that I am not a very fun person to be with on such an outing.  I am not sure how I said whatever it was that I said but I guess my instructions for parking were not given in the right tone of voice.  I didn’t know that telling a certain person that the angle she was backing up at was too sharp was being mean.  I thought I was just giving her information.  The angle was too sharp and she hit the curb long before she could get behind the car in front.

But I think the driver instructor is probably much nicer.  After all it is not her car.

After that episode, I had to finish off my talk (I won’t dignify it with the word “sermon”) which I am giving on Sunday – about my trip to the Congo.

I have much sympathy with those of you pastors out there that live with teenagers and must prepare to impart the word of God to us in the congregation after a session of misunderstanding with a teenaged child.

Foggy sight

I just got off the phone with my daughter.  She is going to be a junior counsellor at our church camp out south of Edmonton in Alberta.  For us the camp is about a seven hour drive away.  I am speaking at church on Sunday and work till four tomorrow.  She has to be at the camp by 4:30 on Saturday.  I like driving but was really hoping to send her on the bus.  The only problem with the bus is getting from the bus out to the lake where the camp is.  So I have been working on connecting up with someone in Edmonton but – you know how reluctant teenagers can be to meet up with someone they don’t “know”.  Today I made connections with the pastor of our church in Edmonton and, voila, all was arranged in no time.

Then my mind snapped into recognition mode.  How like the old Israelites I am.  I often think they must have been so dense.  God would do some wonderful deed for them and then they would turn right around, before the paint was even dry, so to speak, and forget he ever existed.

Well, here I am, just back from an incredible trip to the Congo where God was so obviously in charge, and I am getting all bent out of shape about getting my daughter to camp.  Duh!   I’d better be careful how I talk about the folks back in the Old Testament times.  It’s a bit like looking in a mirror some days!  Actually most days the mirror is so foggy I don’t even recognise where I lack trust.
