Visiting Gibraltar

Over at Flikr I’ve loaded up a set of photos taken on Gibraltar.  This is a place we visited because of old family ties that drew us back.  I was curious to see this place where my great grandfather and my grandfather served in the British Army.  Serving in the British Army was a way to escape the poverty of England and so my great grandfather left England first for India, where my grandfather was born in Karachi, and then other places around the British Empire till when my grandfather was about 16 and could enlist as well, they ended up in Gibraltar.

Some of the photos I’ve taken show the military nature of the Rock. It must have been an arduous place to serve a term.  The road we walked down from the summit of the rock was one that the soldiers would have had to walk up many times, I’m sure.

Large rings in the rock were placed there to assist the teams of men who moved heavy guns up and down those same roads.  We think sometimes of the enjoyment of the sun.  I wonder if the soldiers rejoiced in it or cursed its heat as they were climbing.IMG_2515-1

It is from Gibraltar that my ancestors emigrated to Canada.  I guess they were used to hard work but the introduction to cold must have been a real shock.  yet they stayed, laboured again under adverse conditions and helped build Canada.  I suspect most of us have gotten soft over the years.  We owe much to our forebears.

Leo and I rode the cable car to the top of The Rock and then walked down.  It was a long day of walking.  We probably did 10 Kms and it was not all downhill.  It was a good way to see the place.  At the end of the day we had a meal in a place on the waterfront called the Ipanema where they served Brazilian style – endless meats grilled  and passed on huge skewers.  Wonderful end to a great day.IMG_2568

Packing up

We’ve been just relaxing today, visiting, packing our bags.  Doing all those last minute exchanging of internet addresses and such and thinking that it sure would be great to do this again in a few years.

DSCN3421

This place has become our second home, a place of real welcome and we are going to miss the people here.  Even if we re-visit this place in a few years, many of these fathers will no longer be here.

Belgium this week is cool and a relief from the heat of Spain.  I think we have begun our climate accommodation for the weather at home.  That is OK.  Hot weather is nice for a holiday but two weeks has been adequate.  I do think I have the best tan I’ve ever had though!

So, this week will bring us back to the realities of life in Prince Albert.  There is going to be a lot of pictures to sort through.  But that will have to wait.  I don’t want to spend all of my last afternoon sitting in front of the computer.

More pictures up

We finally are in a hotel with a good and free wifi connection.  so last night I took some time and uploaded more pictures from Belgium and some from Bath.  There will be more to add later but these give you some idea of where we have been and what we have been up to this past week.

More than places though, we have been visiting old friends and it has been so good.

So here are pictures from Leuven and from Bath.

Region of Zonhoven

This is the area where our friend Marcel grew up.  He used to come and play  in these woods.  At the top of the hill is a hermitage DSCN2643

which has been restored.  The chapel is open to anyone.  A fellow lives here in the other part and keeps an eye on the place.  He is also a Psychiatrist.  Must be a loner too.  Beautiful spot if you enjoy quiet and nature but a good hike back to the road.

More pictures here.

It is hard to know where to begin

There are new things to see and photograph every day.  So much so that its hard to find time to deal with posting.

DSCN2611

Our first trip out from Leuven where we are based was to the north where we took some time to visit Ypres and the huge cemetery close to Pashendale.  Here are some of the photos – enjoy the set I have begun at Flikr.

Ypres was the place where my grandfather was wounded in 1916.  He ended up losing a leg but also ended up in hospital in England where he met and married my grandmother.  Good can come of bad things.

Work day at church

Last weekend we were busy as could be getting the church and yard into good shape.  Some of the work was inside, some outside.  I spent a couple of hours disinfecting toys in the nursery.  Everything is looking pretty ship shape now.

Some of the guys were a long way up doing their thing.

Spring

Since it is so beautiful out today I am convinced that Spring is here for real.  Therefore it was time to get rid of the snow on the header.

And truthfully, the pussy willows are filling out and getting fuzzy.

The Staff Party

I work with a great staff and so our annual office party is always fun.  This year we decided to do something a little bit different so we arranged for a van to take us up to one of the lakes north of town where they have a great restaurant for our festive meal together.

We also arranged to rent a chalet and have a sled dog presentation to help entertain us for the afternoon.

The chalet was cozy and of course allowed us to bring our own booze and have a campfire to enjoy outside.  The weather was really great so we all had a good time.

IMG_1583

We learned a lot of interesting things about the sled dogs too, including how hard they have to work!

IMG_1598

Unfortunately, I tripped and fell, landing on my right thumb.  It is swollen and bruised.  Only sprained I think but that is my working hand.  Tomorrow may be interesting.  😦

The meal was as good as promised – way more food than we could eat!

And my partner and fellow dentist was in fine form – not as fine as last year – he was able to get up this morning for church.  He does keep us entertained. 🙂

The Lake Sings

It was such a beautiful day today that I just had to get out of this place – out into a place with trees and water and sky.  So, in spite of the CFL big game which I do enjoy watching, I went for a drive to Anglin Lake.

IMG_1496

The lake is frozen quite solid.  But it was singing to me.  Honestly.  I’ve never heard the ice sing like that before.  A strange haunted noise as if something were trapped in the lake below the frozen surface. I wonder how the sound is produced.

I am glad I went. My spirit needed some fresh air and clear skies.
