They said…

"This is very full week; please come as rested as possible and minimize activities outside of the program."

Right about now I am thinking "What on earth are these Yahoos thinking!" as I am desperately trying to finish up the preparations for the summer course.  Paper is about done – it is as good as it is going to get, I think.  Peer group supervision presentation – just starting that.  Dream written out.  I think it will do.  Not like I dream often.  Devotional time prep – barely started.  Some reading left to do.

Two days left.

Wonder which of those days I will get some rest so I can be "as rested as possible?"

Oh, yeah.  I suppose I should take some clean clothes too and maybe leave some groceries in the house for those left behind – that means shopping.  Last minute visit to my aunt, pick up some supplies for her.  Promised a visit to see my grand daughter.  Am still on call.

Maybe I can sleep on the plane.

This year I just feel a tad rushed.

Why do we do it?

Kids can cause us a lot of headaches.  Last minute glitches in Patrick’s planning kept us up late in the night.  It would be easier to rollover and go back to sleep and let them sort out their mistakes.  But we love them and get involved.  Its what parents do.  Even if the kids are old enough to live with the consequences of their own, may I say it, stupidity.

Now Patrick and Amanda have embarked on their voyage.  Safely.  At least no more phone calls!

Praying for their safely and an uneventful trip.  At the other end another set of parents will take over.  And that will be good.  Can hardly wait to hear that they have arrived – but that will take about 24 hours.

The end of a week of vacation

The last few days of my week and a bit off were spent at Anglin Lake.  Rachelle and Ronin, Zaka and Grace and I were camping.  We found a beautiful spot beside the lake, at the headwaters of the Spruce River (otherwise known as the Little Red River) in a pretty basic camping ground – out side toilets and no running water.  They really could use a good well since the closest drinking water is a good 5 Km’s away.  But the closeness to the lake and the beauty and quietness of the spot made up for this small inconvenience.DSCF0121

The spot is also not really great for swimming so we drove down the road a short distance to Jacobson Bay to the beach and playground.

Monday was very hot but our stay at the beach was interrupted by a sudden rain shower in the middle of the afternoon.

DSCF0102 It seems that this is the time of year for all mothers to take their children swimming but…

we discovered that Zaka is terrified of the water.  Really scared.  He wouldn’t even walk out on the dock.  I picked him up without thinking that he would be so scared and his little body stiffened with fear.

So here he is – enjoying the water toy!  This is about as close as he got.  Wouldn’t even put his toes in to get them cooled off.DSCF0098

His favorite saying this weekend whenever we did something that displeased him was, "I’ll tell my dad."  It was funny in a sad sort of way, since he probably hears this from other kids at day care.  His dad is not exactly around for him to tell much to, unfortunately.

We spent Canada Day by taking a little jaunt up to Waskesiu.  Had lunch by the Waskesiu River and took a short hike during which time we battled thousands of mosquitos.  We all had bug spray on but for Zaka and Grace it didn’t seem very effective.Zaka is so allergic to them.  He’ll need Benadryl tonight.

We had planned to spend this day which was forecast to be hot and sunny on the beach but it was so windy and cold that we cut the beach time pretty short.

Now all that remains is the unpacking!

In Silence

For the next week and a bit I will be on vacation.  I think it would be right to call this a holiday where the time away can be called holy – although if one looks, the sacred can even be found in days at work.  I am going to spend the next week in a retreat house doing a retreat called Praying with the Mystics.  I am not sure if the whole retreat is a silent one but I know that at least one day will be spent in silence.  And there is a lot of reading and thinking and writing to do to prepare for the final intensive week of the spiritual direction course this summer.

Silence will be good.

I will emerge from the retreat house to go to the Cirque de Soleil show on Wednesday – a Mother’s Day gift from my son and his family.  That, too, will be very good.  And I will connect with some friends when the retreat is done.

Time with God and time with friends.  A holiday can’t get much better than that.  I guess some spectacular scenery thrown in would be awesome – but I will have to settle for Saskatoon.  Which isn’t bad, just it isn’t necessarily spectacular, at least till God throws a fiery sunset across the sky.

So posting will be very quiet around here over the next week.  It’s OK.  I don’t know that anything I’ve said here lately has been terribly profound.

I need a break from work.  I need time and space and quiet to think and hear God.

Down South

I made it down to Regina in good time.  This time I took the #2 down through St Louis.  A high percentage of the road all the way down was very rough.  Lots of frost heaves it looks like.  And if this road does not get some repair soon, it will not be the shortest way to Regina – well, maybe the shortest but not the fastest.

But the drive down was good.  The sky was pretty much clear.  None of this mornings snow seemed to be left; the road was dry. Saw lots of geese, some hawks and some ducks.  There were white tail deer in a field – far enough away to be no danger to me and my car – close enough to look magnificent.

I needed the time alone on this drive.  I’ve been too busy lately and will be for a few more days I suspect.  Driving relaxes me.  I listened to some new music that I downloaded a couple of days ago  – Mozetich’s Affairs of the Heart – and so the time passed quickly.  And to be honest, I needed this time with God.  Out on the wide prairies, where even traveling through them in a car, exposes me to enough of their beauty that I find God there in ways that I just don’t when I am faced with all the busyness of home.

Hope

Picture us – a middle aged man, too heavy by far and a middle aged wife( who would not look so dumpy if she was skinnier and trim) sitting together in the confined space of an airplane seat. After three hours it gets old. But there is absolutely no where to move. One wiggles their toes but that is about all the space allows. I was in the middle seat, wedged between Leo and some strange man. It was not the most fun trip in the world traveling back from San Diego to Minneapolis.

But you know what? The next time Leo and I travel together will be better. He will never again be as heavy as he is now. Even when he flies to Winnipeg tomorrow, he will be a bit smaller than he was yesterday.

For Leo and I that is good news. We look forward to some good years enjoying life together. The surgery that Leo had has brought a lot of hope to both of us. We spent some of our traveling time anticipating places we would like to go together in the next few years.

Hope is a good thing. Love is a good thing. The two seem to mix well.

Goodbye Tijuana

Sunrise over Tijuana

We leave this morning to catch our flight from San Diego. Miguel will, hopefully get us back over the border in plenty of time but we are going prepared for a longish wait with water bottles and apple juice for Leo. (He already hates apple juice – this post-surgical care will put it on his do not drink list for a long time)

Then off we fly up to the frozen North. It may be a fatal shock to our systems. I am beginning to feel more sympathetic towards those snowbirds who go south every year.

The beauty of a clear day in the south

The water in the pool looks deceptively inviting.  It was cold enough that not a single person attempted it while we were there.   But the sun was warm and good.

Oh – Bargaining!

This afternoon I tagged along with another family from PA to go shopping. They have been down here before and this time dared to rent a car.

Down to Revolution Boulevard.

During the day it is lined with shops – the little shops common to third world tourist shopping. At the entrance to each is a salesman/con man offering you the most special price of the day – 80% off just for us since we are from Canada and so friendly. And no tax. Boy they know their lines! Each shop sells pretty much the same thing, same quality. Shopping becomes a whole new source of entertainment and we are the sideshow.

I got the required gifts for children and grandchildren and a good long walk in for exercise.

At night this same street becomes a place to buy other wares. Women are lined up along the buildings in the thousands I am told. I don’t think I care to see that. I personally find that kind of spectacle too hard to stomach.

Its 16 C and Sunny

And sitting in the sun at the airport in San Diego waiting for our ride it felt very hot.   And it was.

Driving down here over the border to Mexico was absolutely  no problem.  There were no passport checks, barely a slowing to a stop by our driver.

On the other side of the border, the line up of cars to get into the states went on and on for miles and miles.  On Monday I guess we leave very early and will wait our turn in that long line-up.

So, does that mean that Mexico is a friendlier place to be – more welcoming?  Or is everyone here trying to go north?  Seems to me that the weather here is just fine.

Winnipeg – what I did while I was there

Time flies and this week has been too full of work and stuff to post but last weekend was great.

Winnipeg is an interesting city. It is definitely bigger than Saskatoon but also definitely smaller than Calgary. It feels more like Saskatoon than Calgary. I don’t really know why but maybe it is just the prairie feel to it. I think I like Winnipeg for that reason.

In any case, I had a good time there last weekend. I got there, rented a car and drove to the York hotel. In the afternoon, before Leo was done his courses, I wandered around downtown in the mall. Found a McNally Robinson store – succumbed to my biggest temptation there and came away with a couple new books.

That evening was Leo’s induction into the College of Family Physicians as a Fellow. Gowns and hoods, pin and certificate and new letters to put behind his name FCFP. He works hard to keep his knowledge current so he deserves it – and he loves it!

After all the pomp and circumstance, we had a nice visit with Mr. Daley who was made an honorary member of the college. He is another guy who has worked hard in the field of physical activity promotion and received the Order of Canada. He was wearing his medal so we got to check that out close up.

Then we went in to a performance by Chantal Kreviazuk. She is amazing really, performing up on stage from the piano which she plays as she sings – no other back-up – with a voice that is powerful and clear. And to us it was just a bit special that she had just returned the day before from Ethiopia where she travelled with War Child International. She brought back some stories and then called up an 11 year old girl, Hannah Bennet I think was her name, who has raised a tremendous amount of money for the homeless. Chantal donated $5000 to her and this was matched by the College of Family Physicians and the Scotia Bank.

The next day we spent with friends – first of all at Faith Covenant, then with Chantelle(my niece, not the singer) and friends and then met Jamie and Kim Arpin-Ricci for a really good visit. We still had a bit of time left so we drove down to the legislature and wandered among the bears in the park.
