Art that makes your heart sing

We had, as part of our annual conference, a display of art – both paintings and photographs – done by the members of the congregation. Art can cause in us a sense of worship and wonder. In his image, we are called to create even though the beauty we create is small in comparison.  Art that I really connect with, and it does not have to be “religious” art at all,  brings me onto the presence of God

Art

It seems that art tempts
With longing those
Deeper places of the heart
Where song begins,
As do those spaces
Of open air, with sky
Blue as ocean.
One stands before it
Hanging inert, passive, and
The song begins
Calling to the spirit,
Singing the mind awake
To beauty.
The creator brought it all from
Nothing. We, imitators,
Make do with paint and film.
Pleased when in response
Your eyes sing
Notes of beauty to your soul.

One thing I learned

One of the things I learned this weekend during the conference — sometimes I need to just serve.  I do not have to pack my head full of the latest information.  What I need to hear, God will make sure I hear.  I just need to be ready to listen.

So this weekend, I missed most of the meetings.  But I heard the real story about the escape from the fighting in the Congo by my friend Dr. Roger.  I needed to hear that.

I heard stories of people I got a chance to listen to.  I made some new friends.  Some of the friends I made were under five years old.  They gave out the best hugs.

I also learned that doing a conference like this is a lot of work.  More than I thought.  But it was good work and when a good job is done and you are given compliments, it feels good.  Exhausting but good.  That was the weekend.

Now on with the kitchen reno.

All Day…

And for the past few days I have been busy with my part in what has been a great Covenant Annual Meeting.  My part has been to organize and see that childcare happens.  For the most part it has and has gone well thanks to all the volunteers I had help from.  Today was long though.

Tonight we had a great banquet and final concert put on by the students of Covenant Bible College.

We were up at the Art Hauser Centre in a room off the main room where we had our banquet and the kids seemed to have a good time.  I borrowed the toys from the waiting room at my office.  The slide was a big hit and it is amazing what entertainment kids can get from a few blocks.

We did have to close the door to the room though.  Blocks make a huge amount of noise when they go crashing to the ground.

Anyway, here I am listening to some smooth jazz at the Cafe Randall.  It is late and I should go home to bed but I like the music.

And our world traveler just came in the door.

Welcome home Sara.

The plane was an hour late leaving Edmonton.  We will hear tales of the trip tomorrow.  And for many days to come.

Another one of those crazy busy days

….leading into an even crazier busier weekend.

Leo is off on one of his cross Canada tours.  In Ontario right now.  That actually frees up some time.  My meals get sort of skimpy bordering on fast food.  Cause I have lots to do.

Today started out with another very difficult procedure that took two hours instead of the scheduled one.  What a start to the morning!  Then working hard to catch up all the rest of the day.  We had by noon so thank you to the one patient who did not show up.

Then home and music lessons.  Packed up all my recipe books before the lesson while I was making supper.

Then after lessons, packed up the stuff in the main floor bathroom cupboards.  Took a huge bag of junk out to the garbage.  The cupboard was long overdue for a thorough overhaul.  And then up to the loft to see what things look like up there and began to clean that space up for our guests coming for the Canadian Covenant Annual Meeting.

I think I chose a crazy time to begin renovating the kitchen.  I have to have everything out of it by Monday morning.  My guests leave on Sunday.  But we have to fit it all in before landscaping season starts for David who is doing all the reconstruction work but the cabinets.

I suppose we will all survive.

Got the bike out

Went out for my first bike ride in about 6 months.  What a beautiful day.

No mosquitos.  Lots of warm sun.  Just about perfect.

I wonder what my legs will say tomorrow.

Stories

This morning I walked into the operatory to see a patient seated there.  He pointed at one of my family pictures and asked me about the picture of my daughter and her son (which is already a year old so I need a new one).  So I told him who they were, how we had come to adopt Grace into our family and a bit about the Congo. In return he told me a story.

There was a time when Nelson Mandela visited Canada. At that time he was welcomed and honoured by three leaders from Canada’s First nations.  My patient had been chosen to represent his people.  The opportunity to meet Mr Mandela had been one of the highlights of his life and a great honour for him.

At the time of the visit a traditional sash was presented by this gentleman to Mr. Mandela.  It seems that when a sash is presented on such an occasion, the person it is given to must also be named.  He bestowed on Mr. Mandela the name “Diamond.”

He told Mr Mandela that the name was chosen because his life had shone like a strong light in the world. There is no better stone that reflects the light than a diamond.

Meeting people and hearing their stories – one of the perks of my job.  Most of the time they are just simple stories, often stories about fear, sometimes stories of pain, sometimes stories that make me laugh. But this story was one of the really good ones. I was honoured to have him share it with me.

Sara checking in

Last night we got a call from Sara over in Thailand.  It was good to hear her and to hear that the trip has been wondeful so far.

She said it is weird to be treated s first class visitors – as if they were some rich people.

She probably dosen’t realize fully juyst how rich she is by comparison.  And it is fairly special to us (her dad and I) that we have been able to enrich a child’s life in many ways.  I still remember giving her the first doll she’d ever had, the first paper and pencils to just scribble away as much as she wanted.

When a child calls from far away, there is a special realization that they are precious.  It is good just to hear their voice.

Enjoy the rest of the trip Sara.

Hard up for entertainment

This weekend we had a death in the family.  Our washing machine has been in our home for a little over fifteen years.  Used pretty much every day.  It hasn’t broken down much until this last year.

Thursday night it died for good.  I think the motor just wore out.  Bad noises and bad smell – like hot metal or rubber or both.

We decided it was time to replace it.  So we got one of those fancy front loading pairs.  It has more control buttons than the VCR or DVD.  No remote.

This morning Leo informed me that he was going to come home at noon and watch the DVD instruction video that came with it; then put in a load.

I told him we were hard up for entertainment when we had to resort to watching this flick!  He’s pretty excited about his new toys!  🙂
