It’s a dog’s life

It was a great day, in terms of getting things done.  Groceries, studying, a walk on the river (check out an ice shot on Click) and even a very short nap.  I did not make much headway on getting all the rest of my Christmas decorations down and put away.  Tomorrow.

Just….

Some days I just wish I could stay at home.  I think I need time to let parts of me (that are always busy and rushing to something coming up next) settle down and let me catch up with myself.

My heart does not always seem to be where my body is required to be for reasons of work or home needs.  It leaves me feeling weirdly disjointed and unsettled.

There are days – like today – when it would be fun to have no demands, when it would be fun to invite Zaka over so we could watch Treehouse or look at a book or go for a walk in the cold and snow.  I’d like to pull him in our improvised sleigh and swing him around and watch his eyes sparkle.  Or play a game of hockey on my kitchen floor or crash cars with him for awhile.

With no unfinished quizzes to be concerned about, no bills to pay, no deadlines for anything, just the day to spend enjoying him.

So much to do and so little time.

Words have been sort of few and far between these days.

I guess most of my time has been spent learning things  these days – or at least trying to.  Both my Greek studies and my Bass practicing have demanded a lot of time lately.  It is hard to sit and write a post or even have any thoughts of consequence when I just don’t have much time to sit and ruminate.

I guess I hang onto my morning quiet time and that is when I think.  But go to work time  seems to come so quickly that there is little time to put any of my thoughts into words before I have to head out the door.

And then there is night time.  But look I really should be in bed already.

So life goes these days.

If I keep up the constant practice with the Greek and with the bass, I suspect I will be happy since I can actually see that constant practice pays off.

Oh, yeah.  We had our week of prayer at the church and I did take some pictures – which I will post when I get them downloaded.

So much to do and so little time.

Happy New Year!

It feels as if I should be posting a picture of fireworks or something very celebratory – but alas no pictures.  Slept in nicely this morning after a fun time at the Loseth’s.

Did you know that Dixie is amazing at MadGab?

Fortunately, I was on her team.

We got snow yesterday all evening and into the night but this morning the sun is shining and it is beautiful.  Massa and I got the snowblower started and he is clearing our driveway.  For someone fromthe Congo only a couple years ago – he is amazing.  He told me when I asked him how cold it was out, “Not too bad.”

And for a Saskatchewanian he is right on.

Now for a lazy day of sermon finishing, Greek studies and bass practice.   I think I must be feeling better.  I’m looking forward to the day.

I need QUIET. Please!

There are times when I realize that I am pretty much the only solitude loving introvert living in a crowd of extroverted party lovers.

Maybe that is why I am up at this crazy early time. It is quiet. No one else is up for sure. This is beautiful.

Children come home and make my life joyful – for awhile. Chaos can unfold around me for awhile and I will survive – if I have some solitude to help me recover.

Trouble with finding solitude in the wee hours is that it necessitates a nap in the afternoon. That can also be a good thing.

All is relatively quiet again

Yesterday morning by this time I had already been called away from my patients about four times to respond to an emergency with Rachelle and my car. She took Ronin in for his surgery at 6 am, had no money to pay for the parking lot so parked on the street. The car would not start, she and Ronin were not exactly dressed for the kind of cold Saskatoon was experiencing, keys were dropped, she had to carry a fussy boy through the snow and cold and tempers were short. It was my care so of course – call mom. There was not much I could actually do except muster the forces as best I could from a distance. And of all the days not to be able to get through to CAA – this was it.

Thank God for internet banking, younger and older brothers and a sister- in-law, and everyone who came to her rescue.

Today is so calm. I am very busy at work – just waiting for a patient to get numb at the first small break I’ve had all morning – but no personal crises have called me away to the phone.

Last day of work till the new year. Boy do I need a break.

All’s quiet

So far tonight it is only Leo and I at home.  After a hectic couple of days with many children and grandchildren around, we are soaking in the peace and quiet and lack of demands put on us.

Ronin seems to be ready for his surgery on Monday.  Praying he stays healthy  – no colds to cause a cancellation.  And I guess the surgeon is pretty sure that with this surgery, his hand will be fine.  If he decides he wants his fingers to look better later on in life, he will be older and able to make that choice on his own.  One finger a little shorter does not seem to slow him down.

And today, the big event of our year – Patrick’s wedding.

Well, of course he didn’t just get married on his own.  He has a wonderful wife who is very much in love with him as he is with her.  Amanda looked beautiful today.  The wedding service was small but lovely and the reception very low key and fun.

There are some pictures up on Flikr – not all that great but they are what they are.  There is some proof that either we are not all great photographers or else that we are a challenging bunch to make look good on film.

Now, I believe they head off to the mountains for some skiing and snowboarding.  Hope they come back intact!

Empanadas

The folks from the lab presented me and my partner each with a big tray of home made Chilean empanadas and some home made fresh salsa.

Empanadas

We had about half of them for supper tonight. MMmmn they were good.

Mind you I did have to go and brush my teeth before leaving for practice – the onion breath may just have been a bit much to breath on my friends at practice.

A wonderful change from the usual chocolates and cookies we get as treats.

These days

This preaching gig (if one can call it a gig) has its rewards.  It seems that if I speak my family lets me off from noon meal responsibilities.  And lets me nap in the afternoon.  Not bad.  They don’t let me take a long nap or cook my meals after doing a good wisdom tooth extraction at the office.

Today we had a most delicious stew prepared by Rachelle.  Venison, vegies and potatoes in a tomato based sauce.  Very very good.

And a good nap is – well, always good.  And after partying with my staff last night doubly good.

Yesterday we went on a sleigh ride with real horses in the absolutely freezing cold.  We were all bundled up to an almost unrecognizable state.  I am sorry I have no pictures of that!

I loved the smell of horse and the out of doors.  It brought back memories of my dad.  It was just the sort of thing he would have done and enjoyed.  Funny how memories are triggered by smells and places.

Home

These guys came home last night.  It is good.  Ronin is a toddler not a baby any more.
