Good friends honored

Some good friends and fellow missionaries, Roger and Eileen Thorpe, were recently honored at the Annual Meeting of the Covenant Church.  You can read the story here.

Dr. Roger and Leo worked together for almost all of the years we were in the Congo.  Roger and I did a few procedures together as well – stuff involving the head and neck.  Eileen attempted to teach my kids music at the missionary kids school but I mostly remember her gift of hospitality.

For the past two summers, they have hosted Randall and I as we studied in Chicago, living only a few blocks from North Park Seminary.  They are gracious in opening up their home to us.  And so, again this summer we (and Leo and Lauralea who will join us at the end of the course) will be privileged to stay with them.

Women as Weapons of War

It happens in the Congo. Disturbing, a bit graphic and so sad. Check out this episode of 60 Minutes.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention, Jordon.

Madeleine L'Engle Dies

One of my favorite authors, L’Engle, has died at the age of 88.

Thanks, Jordon, for highlighting this story covered on the CBC website.

I read her stories, read them to my children, read as many of her books as I could get my hands on and enjoyed them all.  She seemed like such a wise woman and her women and girl characters were always strong.  I guess her interaction with science was also fascinating to me.

She taught  valuable lessons in her writing and her faith was an integral part of that.  She strengthened the notion in me that a Godly woman should be strong, intelligent and full of deep faith.

Good News for Coffee Lovers

Since this was under the list of most blogged stories in the news, it is not likely news for coffee drinkers.  Still it does help to justify my coffee habit.  And three cups is about what my daily intake is.  So hats off to good research.

And I don’t want to see a story refuting this anytime soon !

Snowing

Woke up this morning to news about the incredible snowfall in England.  So I popped over to Toni’s blog to see what he had to say.

AHH.  He has pictures.

He rode his bike!!!  Broke the chain a few times.  Still that may have been easier than driving by the looks of the roads on the news.

Just as snow is unusual for England, we would be in a bad situation if we didn’t get it here.  It would mean something was seriously wrong in our climate world and we would fear for the dryness of the summer.

Then the news again catches my ear – one and a half meters of snow in New York State.  That would take some diffing to get out of.  I would definately stay home.  Of course I have a four wheel drive and I might be tempted to do something stupid like try.

Thoughts on an execution

It is hard to figure out why I should feel sorrow over the execution of a foreign leader who I personally had no interaction with.  In fact no one I know has had any kind of personal interaction with him or the regime which caused so many Iraqis distress and pain.  So it seems as if I should just be a disinterested bystander, acknowledge that a just decision was made by the courts in his country and leave it at that.

Last night while I was watching a bit of the news the story was being played.  I imagine we will see many documentaries on this in the future.  This isn’t the first leader to have slid into disfavour by destroying his country in building up his personal power and wealth.  You would think they would learn from each others downfalls.  The quest for power doesn’t seem to leave people alone.  Once in a position to grasp it, power seems to have a demonic force that destroys those who take it.  So the old saying that “power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely” has been shown again to be true.

So, why should I feel any sadness at all over this man who let evil destroy him?  I think it may just be that – he let evil win in his own life and let evil use him to perpetrate horrors on others.  Our judgement on him is probably just.  But, was there no good in him?  Had he so destroyed the image of God in himself that we should rejoice in his death?

I see no cause for rejoicing or even for relief.  The regime put in power now could in time become just as evil.  That has happened too often to look on this execution as cause for hope.

As Randall states in his post, “The bloodshed he caused has led to more bloodshed, which tomorrow will lead to even more bloodshed.”

Hope comes from another source entirely; from a source that looks like foolishness to the great power brokers and politicians of the world.   Still, I think we saw some of that foolishness happening in South Africa.

I Got Flowers

These flowers came with a special message.

Roses are Red
Advice is free
Grandparents you are
Soon times three
Love ?

A riddle.  All afternoon I have been thinking that I know who the parents to be are.  I called Leo.  He got some flowers too.  Another riddle.  So he called #1 son.  Eric assured him that no they had no such expectations.  That only leaves 6 other children of childbearing age, five of whom we are pretty sure are not planning to do anything like this.  But then again, you never know.  Just unlikely that they would be sending us flowers to celebrate the fact.

So, since we pretty much had it narrowed down, I made a call as soon as I got home and yes!  Dave and Annette have another little one on the way.

Funny, good news coming on the anniversary of Logan’s birth and passing 5 years ago.  That is not meant to be morbid – just a special remembrance for us.

A Laptop for every child?

I thought this was such a great idea. Found it via Think Christian taahnks to Anotherthink. I wonder how it will take off?  My biggest concern would be that it has to distributed through large scale government initiatives so will not be for sale.  I guess my concern would be that many large scale government initiatives in Africa have fallen prey to corrupt leaders who find a way to make a profit off such technology.
