Schmaps

A bit ago the people who make these interactive maps asked if I would consider allowing them to shortlist a phot I took last summer when Leo and visited The Field Museum in Chicago.

The museum is a fascinating place holding a collection of archeological finds to  insects and natural science displays.  It holds something that will entrance people of all and almost any interest.  My photo looks down into the open main floor and entrance hall. It really requires more than a day to explore.  Only problem is sensory overload – there is so much to see.

Today

Slipping in some work on this weeks sermon in between cases today.  This week has come so quickly and I have been so busy the last few weeks that it seems as if time has simply vanished.

Today has been good though.  I was really tired yesterday.  I do have a quiz due in Greek but I think I can do it either tonight or tomorrow.  Then I will take a bit of a break from that subject over the holidays – just will need to review the vocabulary from time to time so it doesn’t disappear from my memory.

Today has also been cold and has felt really cold and wintery all day.  I just heard the radio folks say it is -21 with the windchill.  I think this is about as cold as it has gotten so far this winter.

Tonight, Rachelle and Ronin should arrive in Saskatoon.  They will visit a friend there tonight and then come up her tomorrow evening.  I can hardly wait to see Ronin – it has been almost 4 months since they moved to Toronto.

And back again

This weekend I traveled out to Calgary to a retreat centre called Entheos where the Canada Covenant was holding a leadership retreat to help with Spiritual Direction.

Entheos2008 001

The weekend was rewarding in many ways.  I met new friends, was able to do some spiritual direction and heard some phenomenal speakers.  Entheos2008 004

And for me it was great to get out into nature again.  There were some great walking paths and so I’ll post some more pictures on Flikr.  That will probably happen tomorrow since I am tired from the long drive home and have a full day of work tomorrow.

Update:  you can see more photos here

Today

I managed to change the picture on the blog header – with some minor glitches that I actually was able to figure out.  Things were looking a little blank earlier.  It has been one of those days.

At work we had people lined up it seemed and we were trying to help these guys who have totally neglected themselves.  It seems a bit as if they wait till they are desperate till they come in.  So we do our best, we decide that somehow in the next fifteen minutes we are going to achieve anesthesia, have the tooth out and the patient on their way, getting the room ready for the next patient.  Only sometimes – well – all the great plans fall through and the extraction requires some extra surgery or the patient doesn’t get numb as fast as we hoped.  Then all of a sudden we have four more patients lined up and we are a bit behind.  At about 4:45, all of a sudden everyone has been cared for and we are shutting down right on schedule, surprised that the afternoon went as well as it did.

Not only was it a busy day at the office but after work I swung by the store to pick up milk and wraps so that I could make supper and leave some food in the cupboards for the boys who will be dropping in over the weekend.

Then home for a quick supper, packing up my bass as I eat and finishing my packing for the weekend.  To orchestra practice then up to the bank, to the gas station and car wash.  Dropped a book off at the church, returned home, vacuumed out the car and loaded up my stuff into it.  Randall drives it out to Calgary and after a meeting tomorrow, I fly out there to participate in a leadership retreat.

I also started something which I hope will be the beginning of a rewarding pursuit.  I signed up for Introductory Greek.  Distance learning.  I may be crazy but it seemed as if for me this was the place to start.

And I realized that this is not going to be a cheap endeavor!

Post Convention

Since Friday, I have been in Saskatoon for the annual Scientific Session of the College of Dental Surgeons of Saskatchewan.  It was quite the gathering this year – being attended by a record number of people.  I think almost 800 were registered.

Usually I don’t bother to go.  I’m not big on the golfing aspect that usually takes up the half day before the scientific sessions start.  And I am not big on the partying that makes up the evening activities.  For the past few years the topics covered at the convention have not been of particular interest to me either and since I didn’t need the continuing ed points, I did not see much reason in going.

I am glad I went this year.  Dr David Sweet spoke on Thursday.  Topic was Forensic Odontology.  Sort of a more realistic version of CSI, but for real.  I found it fascinating.   Today, I listened to a talk on the Swissair disaster and the role of dentistry in the identification of victims.  Fascinating again – to me.

I think I am coming to the conclusion that there is not going to be enough length to my span of years to learn everything that I find fascinating.

Now I am back home, going over tomorrow’s talk for church.  The sermon.  And also reflecting on how good it was to spend overnight with my kids and grandkids in their home where I feel so comfortable.

Frost family reunion

DSCN1492 I arrived back at home by about 4pm local time.  Zaka traveled so well.  Seven and a half hours of traveling is long for an adult, let alone an almost 3 year old.  The DVD player sure did help make his trip easier.  I think he must have the cars movie pretty well memorized by now!  Its his favourite and the fact that he received a gift of two little cars from the movie while he was at the reunion made his day – made his whole weekend, I think.

The reunion was fantastic.DSCN1500

It was very relaxing.  Nobody got too stressed over the glitches in the schedule – although the cinnamon buns which were a couple of hours late – well.  If they hadn’t been ssooo good when they arrived we might have been upset.  Instead they simply became brunch and we didn’t eat lunch.

There was no hectic schedule.  The only event that has a time attached to it that had to be respected was the golf game.  I hear that everyone that golfed had a good time.  I enjoyed babysitting so that Michelle could golf and Kimia was a perfect angel for me – really.

I think Zaka’s favourite activity was blowing bubbles and he made some great ones.  We all had fun with that.  He met a couple young cousins that he had great fun with. DSCN1516 And Trent was so good with him and the other little kids!  And then there was Glen – he has grand fathering in his blood!

I think I am blessed to have this kind of family in my heritage.

Family reunion coming up

Tomorrow I will head out east to Manitoba, along with Zaka, to the Frost family reunion.  The family place is Minnedosa but there aren’t many Frost’s around that neck of the woods these days.  And it is not as if one can book a Hotel there and use some sort of conference facilities – there is only one rather small and basic hotel in town.  Well, I suppose there are some rooms in town over the local bar but we are not really the boozing type and well – I have heard from reliable sources that there are occasionally creatures in such places that make one itch.  Not good.

So this year we are all going up to Covenant Heights Bible Camp for a few days.  The weather should be nice and that lake is beautiful.  The beds I imagine will be campish – bunk beds I suspect.  Since there is a fair to good chance that there will be no romantic encounters in a bunk bed, I figured this would be a good time to take Zaka along for a little outing with Grandma and Grandpa.

So I am packed.  Batch of cookies made.  Snacks packed for the road.  DVD player.  Bathing suits.  Insect repellent.  Books and computer to work on my talk for next Sunday.

Won’t likely do much blogging.  I can’t imagine that there is any wifi up in the bush.  It will be a good break.

Photos

In defiance of this nasty cold I caught somewhere on the way back from Chicago, I managed to get my photos from my camera to the computer.  I’ve uploaded the best to a Flikr set titled Chicago 2008.

And I did a few of the ones Leo and I stopped and took on the way back from a couple of art shows on Sunday – these are found in my set of Water Birds

And finally Saying Goodbye has some recent photos of Rachelle and Ronin just before they left for Toronto.

So this is crazy

This is coming to you from Winnipeg – where we are stranded tonight.  A storm delayed the departure of our flight out of Chicago on United Airlines by three hours.  We had a two hour layover in Winnipeg so, needless to say, we did not make it.

And the airlines have a great little policy that of course no one is aware of – except the airlines, that if the delay is caused by weather, they are not responsible for the delay and do NOT provide accommodation to make up for the fact that we missed the only flight to Saskatoon this evening.

Oh, yeah, they don’t even give a voucher for food.

Of course, that is maybe more expected since they don’t exactly feed you on their flight anyway.

At least we have seats on tomorrow morning’s flight.  So, barring any more "acts of God" we should be home tomorrow.

So, please God, no more acts!  Leo needs to get home.  I can’t deal with another day of having an uptight workaholic getting stressed out!

In Chicago

So here I am in Chicago writing a post which I will put on my memory stick and then transfer to a computer at school tomorrow.  Technology is sometimes cumbersome.  I think if I were here long enough I’d figure out how to access the wifi at the seminary – but it hardly seems worth it for the few days I have left when the computer room is open to us whenever.  It just seems there hasn’t been much time or energy for anything but class. Now, I think all my presentations are done.  I did my devotional today.  Things have gone well as far as that goes. Then I got back to where I am staying and there is a message that one of my daughters has chipped a tooth.  So I have to find out what is going on with her.  These things would have to happen when I am out of town!!!  See how things fall apart when I am not around? At least the weather here has been great.  No hot humid unbearable days yet.

And Leo gets here in two days.  That will be nice.

You know, I haven’t actually taken a single picture yet.  My head must be too full.  Neil asked me in one of our peer group sessions what image came to mind and there were none up there in my brain.  Maybe listening to lectures and stuff puts in more words than images!

I need to get back to appreciating images.
