Not sure

that learning the Greek alphabet inspires deep theological thoughts – or any other kind of thought that I can write about.

It is kind of fun so far.  Writing out my letters like a kid in grade one.  Learning the sounds each letter makes.  Returning to terms like "dipthong" and "diaeresis" (that is not a descriptive of a bodily function) and reviewing things such as vowels and consonants sure does feel like school though.

I am hoping the memory does not fail miserably when it comes to vocabulary.  I guess I will know soon – that is the next chapter.  And every chapter from here on in till the end.

It will teach me humility and perseverance however.  And on top of that maybe another language.  An ancient one that I will not likely ever speak.

Learning my alphabet

Tonight I began delving into the pages of my textbook and workbook for the Greek class I am taking.  One of the really helpful things is that it comes on CD’s as well and I can download the lectures onto my iPod.

Tonight I began learning the alphabet.  Its not totally unfamiliar since so many Greek letters are used in math and science.  Tonight I was working in my little workbook writing out the letters like a little schoolgirl.  I actually have to know (and remember) what the letters sound like though, not just how to draw them.

Oh, God, restore my memory banks please.

Maybe the two glasses of wine after work clouded my thinking – or maybe it was good for me to sit and laugh with the staff that stayed for the wine and cheese.  I think maybe the laughter helped me recover from a very busy day.  And the cheese made a good supper.

Now to bed.  Its been a long day.

And back again

This weekend I traveled out to Calgary to a retreat centre called Entheos where the Canada Covenant was holding a leadership retreat to help with Spiritual Direction.

Entheos2008 001

The weekend was rewarding in many ways.  I met new friends, was able to do some spiritual direction and heard some phenomenal speakers.  Entheos2008 004

And for me it was great to get out into nature again.  There were some great walking paths and so I’ll post some more pictures on Flikr.  That will probably happen tomorrow since I am tired from the long drive home and have a full day of work tomorrow.

Update:  you can see more photos here

Today

I managed to change the picture on the blog header – with some minor glitches that I actually was able to figure out.  Things were looking a little blank earlier.  It has been one of those days.

At work we had people lined up it seemed and we were trying to help these guys who have totally neglected themselves.  It seems a bit as if they wait till they are desperate till they come in.  So we do our best, we decide that somehow in the next fifteen minutes we are going to achieve anesthesia, have the tooth out and the patient on their way, getting the room ready for the next patient.  Only sometimes – well – all the great plans fall through and the extraction requires some extra surgery or the patient doesn’t get numb as fast as we hoped.  Then all of a sudden we have four more patients lined up and we are a bit behind.  At about 4:45, all of a sudden everyone has been cared for and we are shutting down right on schedule, surprised that the afternoon went as well as it did.

Not only was it a busy day at the office but after work I swung by the store to pick up milk and wraps so that I could make supper and leave some food in the cupboards for the boys who will be dropping in over the weekend.

Then home for a quick supper, packing up my bass as I eat and finishing my packing for the weekend.  To orchestra practice then up to the bank, to the gas station and car wash.  Dropped a book off at the church, returned home, vacuumed out the car and loaded up my stuff into it.  Randall drives it out to Calgary and after a meeting tomorrow, I fly out there to participate in a leadership retreat.

I also started something which I hope will be the beginning of a rewarding pursuit.  I signed up for Introductory Greek.  Distance learning.  I may be crazy but it seemed as if for me this was the place to start.

And I realized that this is not going to be a cheap endeavor!

Autumn Blue

There should be a colour called autumn blue.

The sky is an incredible clear rich blue.  The leaves are golden.  There is no wind.  It is warm.

At least I have windows to watch this autumn day pass as I work.  But I wish I were out lying under this sky not looking at it through glass.

Made Me Think

Reading Randall’s post and the words to the old hymn came to my mind;  My Hope is Built on Nothing Less by Edward Mote.  Here are the words thanks to Cyberhymnal.

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly trust in Jesus’ Name.

Refrain
On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness seems to hide His face,
I rest on His unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.

Refrain

His oath, His covenant, His blood,
Support me in the whelming flood.
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my Hope and Stay.

Refrain

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh may I then in Him be found.
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.

Refrain

Even economic Tsunamis should not wash away really solid foundations.  Not to say that they won’t be shaken but the rock under us should be solid.  We must not let our affluence trick us into choosing to build our lives on wealth which can come and go seemingly overnight.

Morning coffee

I normally make good strong coffee at home but this morning I had some errands and needed to get my car up to the Honda people early for an oil change and such.  So, I stopped in at The Great Western Coffee for a mocha.  I like ti that they have free wifi too.

Its 7:30 now and beginning to get busy.  I’ll leave in a few minutes but it is sort of good to sit here in relative quiet, in a different place than home, posting to my blog.

A lot has gone on in the past few days and lots of my family has been home.  I’ve been the babysitter and chef and hostess and it has all been good.  Nea was dedicated and it is good to see my kids take this step with their  children.  God has been good to me.  I haven’t always felt that way about my kids but I see His goodness more clearly with time.  He hears me when I place them in His hands.

Now off to work.
